Dear Sandy, Susan and Skip, I don't go on FB very often so I just saw that Gene passed last year when I went to post him a birthday greeting today. (I think I missed his BD last year.) I am very saddened to hear of his passing. You don't know me, but I'd like you to know what a blessing he was for me. Gene became a father figure to me after I took his Program Management class at FIT in 1992.
We had not been able to speak over the phone lately because he had difficulty hearing me and my poor signal didn't help but I regularly went to IHB to visit him over the years since 1992, even staying overnight sometimes once I moved to Deland. We spoke often on the phone between visits (until recently). I cherished my friendship with that wonderful, kind, loving, funny, wise man who told the best true stories ever told. I'd sit for hours as he told me about his life on the farm, how he got into college, his work at NASA, coworkers, his dad, the farm, his family, Stanford.
He was always there for me to discuss a problem I faced and provide his sage advice on it as well as ANY other topic. Except for telling me that I would never find a job or a man with my short haircut, he was always right! LOL
I was privileged to be a confidante for him too. He told me that he was grateful to have me in his life because he felt comfortable talking to me about anything, especially very personal issues he struggled with later in life that he didn't want you, his children, to be burdened with. Together we found the solutions and I am happy that I was able to help him as he had helped me. So I will now mourn his loss without being able to say goodbye, which will be difficult, but I had given him a long hug the last time I saw him because I feared I may not see him again. I will miss him terribly as I know you do and I am so sorry for your loss. Gene's passing is a tremendous loss on our earthly plane but a joyful event for the heavenly plane. May he rest in peace. As a 20 something, I had the pleasure (honor) of attending a "Program/Project Management" course given by Gene, when I worked in West Palm Beach, FL in late 80's, early 90's. He gave us 100 or so "gut-level" lessons-learned, things not in any textbook (he said we could read the books to get those guidelines). He said "You learn a lot about program/project management, very quickly, stuff not in textbooks, when you strap your buddies/co-workers to a rocket, send them down the track and then watch it blow-up". I still use today these lessons today and remember Gene fondly for his wisdom, candor and the unique sense of humor he could bring to serious topics. God bless.

We are saddened to hear of Gene's passing today. Gene was one of most interesting instructors I had while I was in the MBA program at FIT in the mid-1980's taking one of his Program Management courses. By chance soon thereafter, he lived over on Evers Rd just a block over from my place and would talk to him very often at his home or while he was out riding his bike. Instead of his offer to drink champagne, I will graciously honor him with a glass of fine whiskey tomorrow. Our prayers for his family. Wanda and Jack

Dear Susan, what an accomplished and obviously brilliant man, your father! And what a wonderfully exciting and fulfilling career, being so involved in the early space program! He obviously lived his life to the fullest. We send our deepest sympathy to you and your family for your loss, with love. Susan and Rick
